Why is the specialist language examination so important?
The specialist language examination (FSP) is a mandatory part of the recognition procedure for foreign medical professionals. It confirms that you can communicate confidently and professionally in German – with patients, colleagues and in medical correspondence.
The examination takes place on C1 level and usually consists of three parts:
- Patient consultation (Anamnesis, consultation, information/consent)
- Documentation (e.g., medical letter)
- Professional discussion with colleagues

Prerequisites
For participation in the technical language course, the following are required:
- Proof of German language proficiency from B2 level
- Completed medical training (or ongoing recognition procedure)
- Willingness to actively and intensively participate
Course Formats & Time Models
Group courses
- Duration: 3 months
- Scope: 5 days per week, 4 teaching units each (20 teaching units/week)
- Start: New appointments every month
- Formats: Online, on-site (Hamburg), hybrid
Course times (freely selectable)
- Morning: 08:00–11:15 or 09:00–12:15
- Afternoon: 12:30–15:45 or 13:00–16:15
- Evening: 16:30–19:45 or 17:00–20:15
Total cost: €2,250 (payable in 3 monthly installments of €750 each)

Language Proficiency Exam Hamburg – Overview
The FSP is mandatory for the medical licence of international doctors. It tests the ability to communicate correctly and confidently in German in a medical context.
