A1 German is the designation for the first level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR is a standard that describes the language skills learners can achieve at different levels.
What does A1 mean?
A1 is the most elementary level and is often referred to as the "beginner level". At this level, learners should be able to master the basics of the language and deal with simple communication situations.
Skills at A1 level:
- Listening and understanding:
- Can understand simple, frequently used expressions and sentences (e.g. information about themselves, family, shopping, work).
- Speak:
- Can form simple sentences to introduce themselves or ask for personal information (e.g. "What is your name?", "Where do you live?").
- Can communicate very easily with conversation partners if they speak slowly and clearly.
- Read:
- Can read and understand short, simple texts (e.g. signs, notes or simple forms).
- Writing:
- Can fill in simple notes and forms, e.g. name, address and telephone number.

A1 German is particularly suitable for beginners who want to learn German for the first time, e.g:

- Persons who require an A1 certificate for a visa or an integration course.

Examinations
There are standardized tests for A1 German, e.g:

These tests are often required for official purposes, such as a visa application or family reunification.
